Inspired by the Imari porcelain exported to Europe in the early Meiji period, Koma-neko consists of tatara dishes with raised-character seals. Two cats form a pair, one with its mouth open and the other closed, in a playful twist on the more well-known koma-inu, the name of lion-dog statues traditionally placed at shrines to ward off evil spirits.
