Technique: Specially Applied Glaze, Underglaze Iron Oxide Decoration, Iron Brushwork, Rust Lacquer
The items of this series are crafted using a technique known as shakugake or nagashikake. In this technique, artists create subtle drip patterns by pouring glaze over the surface of the piece with a wooden shaku ladle while spinning it on the potter’s wheel. The varied patterns that emerge are preserved as free-flowing trails of thick glaze, creating unique landscapes across the face of each piece. We then tastefully finish each piece with a one-of-a-kind pattern using a deep, ink-like gosu pigment.
